Mutant dengue attacks children

Trinidad and Tobago's Newsday "The strain of the dengue virus prevalent in Trinidad and Tobago (TT) is fatal to children, Minister of Health Dr Fuad Khan yesterday announced during a press conference at the Ministry of Local Government’s Kent House office in Maraval.

Khan said the dengue virus has been present in TT for the past 30 years, but a “mutant” strain of the virus has evolved, which has proven to be fatal to children, “the most vulnerable group in the country.”

Dengue fever can be caused by any one of four types of the dengue virus: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. A person can be infected by at least two, if not all four types, at different times during a life span, but only once by the same type."
