Barbados in mourning: PM Thompson is dead

This is Prime Minister David Thompson of BarbadosImage via Wikipedia nationnews.com: "Barbados has been plunged into mourning with the death of Prime Minister David Thompson. He died this morning at 2:10.
According to reports, he died at his home in Mapps, St Philip with his family by his side.
Thompson served as Prime Minister of Barbados from January 2008 when the Democratic Labour Party won the government. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September.
It was during May that Thompson, accompanied by his personal physician Dr Richard Ishmael, announced to Barbadians that he was not well and was seeking medical attention."

He died at his home in St Philip on the Caribbean island. He had been ill since March and had travelled several times to New York for treatment.

Mr Thompson was elected prime minister in January 2008.

Governor General Sir Clifford Husbands has appointed the attorney general and deputy PM Freundel Stuart to head the government until elections in 2012."

Thompson’s DLP came into office on a mandate of lowering the cost of living, improving healthcare, and tackling crime.

His coming into office was however marked by the global economic crisis and credit crunch for which he advised, unlike many of his Caribbean counterparts, against overzealous belt-tightening, putting the onus on government and the private sector to stimulate the economy .

David Thompson attended Barbados’ Combermere School before going on to study Law at the University of the West Indies."
