Hon Dr Anthony Smellie, Chief Justice of the Cayman Islands, opened the first working day of the Eighth Annual Caribbean Commercial Law Workshop (CCLW), on 21 August 2006, hitting hard against extra-regional, external financial agencies.

Addressing some 150 Attorneys-at-Law from 16 different countries, gathered at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Dr Smellie described the emergence of several of 'our Caribbean States as jurisdictions of choice for international financial business' as giving, 'clear legitimacy of our Region's right to compete in the global economy.'"
