'How much more must we endure?' - grieving relatives ask

Stabroek News: "Pandemonium broke out at the Lyken Funeral Home at the strike of noon yesterday after the bodies of 11 of the Bartica 12 arrived to the wailing of relatives, who had waited for close to two hours for them to arrive.
Even as they waited, having received word that their loved ones might have been shot and killed by heavily armed gunmen at Bartica on Sunday evening, some hoped that it was a mistake. However, after the bodies arrived, some were left speechless while others wailed uncontrollably and asked themselves, why."

Bartica reeled yesterday, stunned at the murders of 12 persons including three policemen in the Region Seven community by heavily-armed gunmen, who, in a well planned attack, also stole a quantity of guns and ammunition on Sunday night.

Kaieteur News Guyana: "The mining community of Bartica was transformed into a virtual slaughter house last night, after scores of heavily-armed gunmen launched a brazen 60 minute attack in the heart of the community, killing 12 people, including three policemen and wounding five other people.
Eyewitnesses said that two of the policemen were slaughtered while huddling in cupboards after the gunmen stormed the station.
The third was gunned down outside the station.
Regional Chairman Holbert Knights also confirmed that five civilians were placed to lie facedown on the Transport and Harbour Stelling, located at First Avenue, Bartica, and then shot in their heads."

Another massacre in Guyana - CBC.bb: "Security forces were Monday searching for unidentified gunmen that shot and killed 12 people in the small mining town of Bartica, as at least one Caribbean Community (CARICOM) government condemned the latest wave of mass killings in Guyana.

The Government Information Agency (GINA) said that the police and army had launched an air, sea and land operation in response to the one hour shooting spree on Sunday night that left nine residents and at least three police officers killed. A number of other persons were also injured.

The bodies of the dead were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary where autopsies will be carried out later this week.

Chairman of the Region Seven (Cayuni/Mazaruni) Holbert Knights told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that of the 12 people killed, five were workers of a general store in the area."
