New York – The Board of Directors of the Garifuna Coalition USA, Inc. a, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization is pleased to announce its First Annual Yellow White and Black Fundraising Gala, scheduled for Saturday November 15th, 2008 at Maestro’s Caterers in the Bronx. (http://www.maestroscaterers.com/)
The Yellow White and Black Fundraising Gala will celebrate the Garifuna Coalition USA, Inc’s tenth anniversary. Funds raised at the Gala will be used for the development of the Garifuna Coalition Advocacy Center in the Bronx. The Center will serve as the basic advocacy and organizing needs of Garifuna immigrants from Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The theme for the First Annual Yellow White and Black Fundraising Gala is based on the colors of the Garifuna flag, which consists of three horizontal stripes: Yellow is for the Amerindian heritage, hope and liberation, White is for peace and freedom and Black is for the African Heritage, death and suffering. According to the National Garifuna Council of Belize’s website, this flag has long been accepted internationally as the flag of the Garifuna Nation.
As promoter of harmony and unity among the Garifunas, the Garifuna Coalition selected the yellow white and black theme as a unifying appeal to all Garifunas in New York City and surrounding areas to join them in its tenth anniversary celebration, as well as to commemorate Garifuna Settlement Day which is celebrated on November 19th in Belize and on November 26th in Guatemala, as a prelude to the Garifuna Reunion in 2009.
In addition to the recognition of the Garifuna flag by Garifunas from Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the Garifuna Diaspora, is the recognition of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (Yurumein), as the Garifuna homeland.
However, while the Garifuna Diaspora has maintained links and connections with the Central American countries, such has not been the case with St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Therefore, in an effort to reestablish the link with their homeland, the Garifuna Coalition extended a special invitation to the Honorable Cosmus Cozier, General Consulate of St Vincent & the Grenadines in New York City, which he graciously accepted and will present him with a recognition award during the gala.
Furthermore, the Garifuna Coalition has planned a Garifuna Reunion in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 2009 in commemoration of the 212th Anniversary of the Exile of the Garifunas. At the suggestion of Consulate Cozier, a proposal has been submitted to Ambassador Ellsworth I.A. John, Director of the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit (RIDU) Office of the Prime Minister to incorporate the Garifuna Reunion as part of Vincy Homecoming 2009, the government’s strategy to have as many Vincentians who are abroad, return home for and during the year of the 30th anniversary of Saint Vincent and the Grenadine’s independence.
The Yellow White and Black Gala is the prelude to the Garifuna Reunion and we invite everyone to reserve the date: November 15th, 2008 and stay tuned for additional information about Vincy Homecoming 2009- The Garifuna Reunion
