Indentured East Indians make Trinidad and Tobago their home

Trinidad Express "The Indentured Indians, after serving their term or contract of five years on the British Colonial Estate, were given options of return passage to India, renewing their bond, or accepting land as payment in lieu of return passage to India.

Many of the Indentured Indians accepted land as payment in lieu of the return passage to India to stay in a land they made their home during their contracted term. They built thatch houses on the land acquired and planted small crops to continue their livelihood. Having come to the West Indies with very little possessions, East Indians adapted by making replicas of tools and kitchen utensils which they used in India to do their chores, both at home and in the fields."
