Photos: Brazilian gangs take on army, cops

JamaicaObserver.com: "RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Military troops joined police securing the perimeter of a Rio de Janeiro shantytown today that has long been a stronghold for drug gangs and a symbol of their ability to rule vast areas of the seaside city with impunity.
Federal and state police officers conducted door-to-door searches and patrols within the Vila Cruzeiro slum as 800 military troops, trained in surrounding and isolating conflict areas, deployed and took up posts at the entrances to the hillside community, General Adriano Pereira Junior told a news conference."
